About the distillery

Ben Nevis Distillery is a distillery in Scotland that distills Ben Nevis 10 Years Old and Ben Nevis 21 Years Old whisky. It is located at Lochy Bridge in Fort William and sits just at the base of Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the British Isles, which rises to 4,409 feet above sea level.

A coastal distillery in the Western Highlands, Ben Nevis draws its water from the Allt a’Mhuilinn which originates from two pools, Coire Leis and Coire na’Ciste. Founded in 1825 as an independent enterprise, it has been owned by Nikka Whisky Distilling of Tokyo, Japan, since 1989.

Other Information

This lot offers the fantastic opportunity to own one cask of Ben Nevis single malt scotch whisky, distilled in 1996.

Originally filled with Ben Nevis spirit on the 11th June 1996, the whisky has since been maturing in a refill hogshead (#854). This is currently held in bond at Ben Nevis distillery.

The cask was regauged on the 28th May 2021, summarising the following:

- Original bulk 253 litres | Original strength 63.5% ABV | 161.2 litres of alcohol

 - New bulk 114.1 litres | New strength 52.6% ABV | 60.32 litres of alcohol

This would currently yield approximately 163 x 70cl bottles of 25 Year Old Ben Nevis whisky.

UNOFFICIAL TASTING NOTES:

COLOUR:
 Bright yellow gold.

NOSE:
A slight scent of hard candy fruit drops, but with a definite tilt towards tropical fruit, especially pineapple.  There is also barley scotch sweetness.  The aroma is lightly closed, which means a return nose pays dividends, as the balance of the sweet and the tropical is exquisite, with the barley sugar overtaking the pineapple over time.

PALATE:
Initially sweet and tropical, but a spicy pepper builds to a mouthwatering dryness, that tingles on the lips. There is also some summer fruit, with whispers of cherry and strawberry that balance the spiciness and give this dram an excellent balance.  A little water opens the sweetness out and slightly damps down the spice, letting the tropical pineapple shine a little brighter.

BODY:
A slow creamy build that fills the mouth, then drys away.

FINISH:
Long finish with the spice lingering on the sweetness to the very end.

IMPORTANT:

 - Annual storage fee will become payable by the buyer.

 - Legal ownership of the cask will be transferred to the buyer once payment has been received by Whisky Hammer. Funds will be held by Whisky Hammer until the buyer is in legal receipt of the cask ownership to protect the buyer's transaction.

 - Ownership of this cask is auctioned in bond.  The buyer will be responsible for any costs relating to removing the cask from bond in the future (i.e UK excise duty / VAT) as well as any other costs associated with cask movement and bottling.

 - Non-UK buyers must appoint a duty representative to act on his/her behalf for transfer of ownership of the cask (Whisky Hammer can assist in finding a UK representative if required).  The duty representative will need to be registered with HMRC and will normally charge an annual fee for the service.

 - Please note if the new owner is a UK revenue trader (business), they will need to be registered with HMRC and hold a WOWGR certificate.
