About the distillery

The Macallan distillery is a single malt Scotch whisky distillery in Craigellachie, Moray. The Macallan Distillers Ltd, is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Edrington Group which purchased the brand from Highland Distillers in 1999.

Undoubtably one of the most exciting collections released by The Macallan in history, "The Red Collection" features an outstanding array of vintages - from 40 to 78 year old Macallan, bottled in 2020.

The 78 year old is the oldest expression ever to be released by The Macallan since the 72 year old Lalique "Genesis Decanter" which was released in 2018.

Macallan describe the Red Collection as “an exquisite range of distinguished and rare single malt Scotch whiskies, shaped by the actions of our founder Alexander Reid and key characters in our history, who have laid the foundations for our single malt today. This collection celebrates the rich range of reds present naturally in every step of our process”.

The 78 year old is described as reflecting “deep respect for time, tradition and craftsmanship”. It is being presented by The Macallan lead whisky maker Sarah Burgess and was laid down decades ago in The Macallan’s “hand-picked oak casks”. Tasting notes describe its colour as “Sunset on the Spey”.

Its oak presentation box is crafted by hand in the UK, using the same sustainable European oak used to make The Macallan casks. The box is upholstered with sustainably sourced, soft Scottish leather from Bridge of Weir Leather.

Due to the various ages of bottles and their seals, condition of liquid is at the buyer's discretion and no claim can be lodged against leakage in transit.

It is not uncommon for bottles to contain sediment, either in the form of naturally occurring lipids that precipitate out of the whisky at low temperatures or in the form of cask related sediment. This is particularly prevalent in older bottlings. Neither naturally occurring lipids or cask related sediment would affect the taste if consumed and it is not considered a fault.
