About the distillery
Springbank distillery is one of the last surviving producers of Campbeltown Single Malts. The distillery, located on the southern Kintyre peninsula, produces three distinct types of single malt Scotch whisky.
Springbank is one of only two distilleries in Scotland to perform every step in the whisky making process, from malting the barley to bottling the spirit, on same premises: the other is Kilchoman Distillery who also grow their own barley. While a few others still maintain the first step in the process, the malting of barley (which is becoming more rare), Springbank also bottles their own whisky.
Three variants of single malt are produced from its distillery by tweaking the production process at various stages;
Springbank Single Malt is the most popular variety, Longrow Single Malt is a highly-peated, double-distilled whisky and Hazelburn Single Malt, the newest variety.
Other Information
This lot offers the fantastic opportunity to own one cask of Springbank single malt scotch whisky, distilled in 1993.
Originally filled with Springbank spirit on 3rd December 1993, the whisky has since been maturing in a Fresh Sherry Hogshead (cask number 531) which is currently held in bond at the Springbank distillery.
The cask was regauged on 28th April 2022 summarising the following:
- New bulk 135.4 litres | New strength 52.4% ABV | 71.4 RLA (Regauged Litres of Alcohol)
This would currently yield approximately 193 x 70cl bottles of 28 Year Old Springbank.
Unofficial Tasting Notes:
COLOUR:
Pale golden yellow.
NOSE:
Dive into the depths of an old style sherried malt with overtones of dark dried berry fruits that are sticky and sweet. Notes of Demorara sugar and liqueur cherry chocolates. Following on there are gingerbread and prunes slipping into sticky toffee pudding with oak in the background.
PALATE:
Not as sweet as the nose suggests as the oak is more forward, but there in the background is the sweetness of treacle and dark fruit jammy notes, with hints of antique leather and slight medicinal touches. Balanced with some Darjeeling and tobacco accents that round this out into a real noteworthy Campbeltown malt.
BODY:
Full mouthfeel coats the tongue and mouth, as you would expect with the Campbeltown pedigree
FINISH:
Very long and deep with orange peel and some nuttiness.
IMPORTANT:
- Springbank distillery require the cask be removed from their warehouse within 90 days of the transfer of ownership.
- Any storage and/or cask transfer admin fees will become payable by the buyer.
- Legal ownership of the cask will be transferred to the buyer once payment has been received by Whisky Hammer. Funds will be held by Whisky Hammer until the buyer is in legal receipt of the cask ownership to protect the buyer's transaction.
- Ownership of this cask is auctioned in bond. The buyer will be responsible for any costs relating to removing the cask from bond in the future (i.e UK excise duty / VAT) as well as any other costs associated with cask movement and bottling.
- Non-UK buyers must appoint a duty representative to act on his/her behalf for transfer of ownership of the cask (Whisky Hammer can assist in finding a UK representative if required). The duty representative will need to be registered with HMRC and will normally charge an annual fee for the service.
- Please note if the new owner is a UK revenue trader (business or private individual connected to the trade), they will need to be registered with HMRC and hold a WOWGR certificate.
Consumer protection laws do not apply to purchases from private sellers. More specifically, the right to reject (section 20 of the Consumer Rights Act) does not apply. Buyer's rights are significantly reduced when a sale is carried out between two individuals. Goods from private sellers do not have to be fault-free and if defects or marks were clearly mentioned in our description and lot photos, then you do not have a case against the seller. However, if the seller's goods do not match the description, you have the right to ask for a refund on return of the goods to us.
