About the distillery

Springbank distillery is one of the last surviving producers of Campbeltown Single Malts. The distillery, located on the southern Kintyre peninsula, produces three distinct types of single malt Scotch whisky.

Springbank is one of only two distilleries in Scotland to perform every step in the whisky making process, from malting the barley to bottling the spirit, on same premises: the other is Kilchoman Distillery who also grow their own barley. While a few others still maintain the first step in the process, the malting of barley (which is becoming more rare), Springbank also bottles their own whisky.

Three variants of single malt are produced from its distillery by tweaking the production process at various stages;

Springbank Single Malt is the most popular variety, Longrow Single Malt is a highly-peated, double-distilled whisky and Hazelburn Single Malt, the newest variety.

Other Information

This lot offers the fantastic opportunity to own one cask of Springbank single malt scotch whisky, distilled in 1998.

Originally filled with Springbank spirit on 27th November 1998, the whisky has since been maturing in a Fresh Sherry Hogshead (cask number 430) which is currently held in bond at the Springbank distillery.

The cask was regauged on 14th September 2021 summarising the following:

- Original bulk 244 litres | Original strength 63.2% ABV | 154.2 litres of alcohol

 - New bulk 134.0 litres | New strength 44.6% ABV | 60.0 RLA (Regauged Litres of Alcohol)

This would currently yield approximately 191 x 70cl bottles of 23 Year Old Springbank.

Unofficial Tasting Notes:

COLOUR: Light amber gold.
NOSE:
A dark and dense nose reveals dried fruit, figs and polished woods.  Peeping through are creamier notes of coffee parfait and butterscotch, with a slightly subdued peppercorn tinge. Repeated nosings reveals a chocolate and salted caramel halo.
PALATE:
Immediately dry, with the wood and polish dominating. As the nose suggested. The denseness is again cut with red stoned fruit skins, sesame oil, crème caramel sweetness tempered with tobacco leaf astringency that balances the deeper sweeter notes to give a sublime balance. The thickness of taste is very reminiscent of old style malts.
BODY:
Medium body with great balance.
FINISH:
Dark chocolate. Mild. Light but long.

IMPORTANT:

- Springbank distillery require the cask be removed from their warehouse within 90 days of the transfer of ownership.

 - Any storage and/or cask transfer admin fees will become payable by the buyer.

 - Legal ownership of the cask will be transferred to the buyer once payment has been received by Whisky Hammer.  Funds will be held by Whisky Hammer until the buyer is in legal receipt of the cask ownership to protect the buyer's transaction.

 - Ownership of this cask is auctioned in bond.  The buyer will be responsible for any costs relating to removing the cask from bond in the future (i.e UK excise duty / VAT) as well as any other costs associated with cask movement and bottling.

 - Non-UK buyers must appoint a duty representative to act on his/her behalf for transfer of ownership of the cask (Whisky Hammer can assist in finding a UK representative if required).  The duty representative will need to be registered with HMRC and will normally charge an annual fee for the service.

 - Please note if the new owner is a UK revenue trader (business or private individual connected to the trade), they will need to be registered with HMRC and hold a WOWGR certificate.
