About the distillery

Arran distillery is a whisky distillery in Lochranza, Scotland, the only distillery on the Isle of Arran.

In 1994 Arran Distillers was founded by Harold Currie, former director of Chivas with the intention of building a distillery on Arran.  During the construction of the distillery, a pair of Golden Eagles built their nest on a cliff near the distillery; since Golden Eagles are a protected species, construction of the distillery was temporarily halted. The distillery opened in 1995.

Other Information

This lot offers the fantastic opportunity to own one cask of Arran single malt scotch whisky, distilled in 2009.

Originally filled with Arran spirit on 26th May 2009, the whisky has since been maturing in a bourbon barrel (cask number #09/090) which is currently held in bond at the Isle of Arran Distillers.

The cask was regauged on 15th February 2021 summarising the following:

 - New bulk 175 litres | New strength 57.8% ABV | 102.5 litres of alcohol

This would currently yield approximately 250 x 70cl bottles of 11 Year Old Arran whisky.

Please note:

1) the cask photo shown is for display purposes only and is not the actual cask being sold.

2) the sample is shown for confirmation of the colour only and is not included in the sale.

Unofficial tasting notes:

COLOUR:
Pale yellow gold, with pinkish edges.

NOSE:
Initially a rich sherry nose, with tablet sweetness.  Underlying is a nostalgic whiff of cherry pipe smoke ripeness.  Settles down to a mid-section of sun dried sultanas.  Great balance on the nose that invites you to dive deeper.

PALATE:
Still lively for its age and the high ABV certainly makes itself known.  Then the signature hit of pineapple kicks in with dried fruit sweetness and takes control with a slight spice underscore.  There is a creaminess of milk chocolate and a background of honeyed hazelnuts.  The ending returns to the pineapple and the spice.  Delicious.

BODY:
Good mouth coating that balaces well with the fruit, sherry and spice.

FINISH:
Medium-long with the pineapple and spice fading to a peppermint coolness.

IMPORTANT:

 - Annual storage fees (currently £40pa) and any cask transfer admin fees will become payable by the buyer. Please note that storage is paid up until March 2023.

 - Legal ownership of the cask will be transferred to the buyer once payment has been received by Whisky Hammer.  Funds will be held by Whisky Hammer until the buyer is in legal receipt of the cask ownership to protect the buyer's transaction.

 - Ownership of this cask is auctioned in bond.  The buyer will be responsible for any costs relating to removing the cask from bond in the future (i.e UK excise duty / VAT) as well as any other costs associated with cask movement and bottling.

 - Non-UK buyers must appoint a duty representative to act on his/her behalf for transfer of ownership of the cask (Whisky Hammer can assist in finding a UK representative if required).  The duty representative will need to be registered with HMRC and will normally charge an annual fee for the service.

 - Please note if the new owner is a UK revenue trader (business or private individual connected to the trade), they will need to be registered with HMRC and hold a WOWGR certificate.

Please ensure that you undertake close up viewing/inspection prior to placing any bid.  If you are not satisfied with the photos, or if you have questions beyond the offered description and images, please click "ask a question" to make specific enquiries or to receive a more in-depth condition report.  Lots will be sold as seen and described.

Insurance against breakage or loss during transit is available at checkout at a cost of 3% of the hammer price.
