About the distillery
Springbank distillery is one of the last surviving producers of Campbeltown Single Malts. The distillery, located on the southern Kintyre peninsula, produces three distinct types of single malt Scotch whisky.
Springbank is one of only two distilleries in Scotland to perform every step in the whisky making process, from malting the barley to bottling the spirit, on same premises: the other is Kilchoman Distillery who also grow their own barley. While a few others still maintain the first step in the process, the malting of barley (which is becoming more rare), Springbank also bottles their own whisky.
Three variants of single malt are produced from its distillery by tweaking the production process at various stages;
Springbank Single Malt is the most popular variety, Longrow Single Malt is a highly-peated, double-distilled whisky and Hazelburn Single Malt, the newest variety.

This lot offers the fantastic opportunity to own one cask of Springbank single malt scotch whisky, distilled in 1997.
Originally filled with Springbank spirit on 11th April 1997, the whisky has since been maturing in a Fresh Sherry Hogshead (cask number 332) which is currently held in bond at the Springbank distillery.
The cask was regauged on 2nd February 2024 summarising the following:
- New bulk 49.2 litres | New strength 46.5% ABV | 23.1 RLA (Regauged Litres of Alcohol)
This would currently yield approximately 70 x 70cl bottles of 26 Year Old Springbank.

COLOUR:
A solid bronze gold.
NOSE:
Deliciously sweet malt and sherry burst onto the nose. There is a tiny whiff of smoke along with warm rich fig and dates, that has an undergrowth of nuts, dark chocolate mingling with an oak forest. This is, as expected from Springbank, a complex and fabulously fragrant nose that invites you in deeper.
PALATE:
Initially smooth, then a kick of spiced alcohol. This smoothed over with the chocolate, sweet honey, and sherry. There are orchard pear fruits along with some gentle orange citrus. The sherry holds a firm foundation with baking spices with a crackle of black pepper and vanilla oak. What the nose promised is definitely followed through on the taste.
BODY:
Full mouth coating pleasure. The sherry gives a lovely depth.
FINISH:
Lovely long finish that allows the sweet-spiced heat to slowly sink. The sweetness gives a lovely afterglow along with the spice that fades with tobacco leaf and dry oak.
IMPORTANT:
- Springbank distillery require the cask be removed from their warehouse within 90 days of the transfer of ownership.
- Any storage and/or cask transfer admin fees will become payable by the buyer.
- Legal ownership of the cask will be transferred to the buyer once payment has been received by Whisky Hammer. Funds will be held by Whisky Hammer until the buyer is in legal receipt of the cask ownership to protect the buyer's transaction.
- Ownership of this cask is auctioned in bond. The buyer will be responsible for any costs relating to removing the cask from bond in the future (i.e UK excise duty / VAT) as well as any other costs associated with cask movement and bottling.
- Non-UK buyers must appoint a duty representative to act on his/her behalf for transfer of ownership of the cask (Whisky Hammer can assist in finding a UK representative if required). The duty representative will need to be registered with HMRC and will normally charge an annual fee for the service.
- Please note if the new owner is a UK revenue trader (business or private individual connected to the trade), they will need to be registered with HMRC and hold a WOWGR certificate.
Consumer protection laws do not apply to purchases from private sellers. More specifically, the right to reject (section 20 of the Consumer Rights Act) does not apply. Buyer's rights are significantly reduced when a sale is carried out between two individuals. Goods from private sellers do not have to be fault-free and if defects or marks were clearly mentioned in our description and lot photos, then you do not have a case against the seller. However, if the seller's goods do not match the description, you have the right to ask for a refund on return of the goods to us.
