About the distillery
Bruichladdich Distillery is a distillery on the Rhinns of the isle of Islay in Scotland. The distillery produces mainly single malt Scotch whisky, but has also offered artisanal gin. It is owned by Rémy Cointreau after being owned by Mark Reyneir.
One interpretation of the Gaelic word Bruichladdich is "stony shore bank", referring to a post-glacial raised beach, though an alternative, perhaps more pertinent translation may be "rocky lee shore".
Pronunciation : "brook-laddie"
Other Information
This lot offers the fantastic opportunity to own one cask of Rhinns single malt scotch whisky, distilled in 2011.
Originally filled with Rhinns spirit on the 2nd November 2011, the whisky has since been maturing in an fresh bourbon barrel (cask number 20) which is currently held in bond at our Still Spirit Warehouse.
The cask was regauged in September 2023, summarising the following:
- New bulk 167.3 litres | New strength 58.6% ABV | 98 litres of alcohol
This would currently yield approximately 239 x 70cl bottles of 11 Year Old Rhinns whisky.
UNOFFICIAL TASTING NOTES:
COLOUR:
Light, pale faded straw
NOSE:
Reminiscent of a Port Charlotte on the nose, but with softer smoke. Rhinns is a Bruichladdich treasure. The smoke has a sweetness and floral nature like lightly charred heather with a herbal edge of damp meadow grass.
PALATE:
The lightness of the smoke leads to an orchard fruit sweetness – like pears in syrup. The underlying sugars then delve down into honeyed heather. There is a shadow of spice, but it plays second fiddle to the smoke and fruit. Oak dries the palate with a piquant astringency, that counters the sweetness and keeps everything on an even keel and balanced.
BODY:
Light finesse that dries down well – an excellent aperitif.
FINISH:
Scottish tablet with a woody smoulder of smoke. Delicious linger.
IMPORTANT:
- Annual storage fees will become payable by the buyer. Insurance is charged at 1% of the value of the cask together with a storage fee of £50 per annum.
