About the distillery
Springbank distillery is one of the last surviving producers of Campbeltown Single Malts. The distillery, located on the southern Kintyre peninsula, produces three distinct types of single malt Scotch whisky.
Springbank is one of only two distilleries in Scotland to perform every step in the whisky making process, from malting the barley to bottling the spirit, on same premises: the other is Kilchoman Distillery who also grow their own barley. While a few others still maintain the first step in the process, the malting of barley (which is becoming more rare), Springbank also bottles their own whisky.
Three variants of single malt are produced from its distillery by tweaking the production process at various stages;
Springbank Single Malt is the most popular variety, Longrow Single Malt is a highly-peated, double-distilled whisky and Hazelburn Single Malt, the newest variety.
Other Information
This lot offers the fantastic opportunity to own one cask of Springbank single malt scotch whisky, distilled in 1993.
Originally filled with Springbank spirit on 14th May 1993, the whisky has since been maturing in a refill bourbon barrel (cask number 200) which is currently held in bond at the Springbank distillery.
The cask was regauged on 4th August 2023 summarising the following:
- Original bulk 240 litres | Original strength 63.6% ABV | 152.6 LOA
- New bulk 104.7 litres | New strength 50.5% ABV | 53.1 RLA (Regauged Litres of Alcohol)
This would currently yield approximately 149 x 70cl bottles of 30 Year Old Springbank.
Unofficial Tasting Notes:
COLOUR:
Light, faded rose gold.
NOSE:
Soft on the nose with hints of tropical mango and pineapple. This is countered by a blast of sea air that fills the glass over time with salt and ozone notes. Finally, there is Springbank’s house style shines through with the merest sniff of coconut.
PALATE:
The taste magnifies the nose and crystalises beautifully the minerality with the coastal influence. There is a groundswell of spicy ginger and clove that adds to the blend along with a drying oak layering over the tropical fruits, that recede as the spice tide washes in. Exceptional palate for the age and ABV of this classic Campbeltown malt.
BODY:
An expansive malt that fills and coats the mouth.
FINISH:
Beautifully drying from the oak with the tingle of the spice undercurrented by the tropical fruit. Tobacco leaf and pepper heat the cool coastals.
