About the distillery

The Balvenie distillery is a Speyside single malt Scotch whisky distillery in Dufftown, Scotland, owned by William Grant & Sons.

In early 1892 work began to convert an 18th-century mansion (Balvenie New House) into a distillery.  The building took fifteen months to complete, and on 1 May 1893, the first distillation took place at the Balvenie Distillery.

In 2007, The Balvenie's Global Brand Ambassador, David Mair presented an online documentary series about the making of malt whisky, shot in and around the Balvenie Distillery.

Other Information

The Balvenie DCS Compendium consists of 25 whiskies and an accompanying book and acts as a tribute to Balvenie malt master, David C Stewart.

The Compendium is split into 5 'chapters', with each chapter featuring 5 different single cask whiskies from 5 different decades.

This bottle is from Chapter 1, and is the youngest Balvenie ever released at 9 years old.  Distilled May 2005 and bottled in March 2015, this whisky has been matured in refill American Oak Hogshead.

A different chapter will be released annually between 2015 and 2019, each of them reflecting a different chapter in the accompanying book, written by Balvenie global brand ambassador Dr Sam Simmons.

The theme of Chapter 1 is 'Distillery Style'. Chapters 2 to 5 will focus respectively on: 'The Influence of Oak', 'Secrets of the Stock Model', 'Expecting the Unexpected' and 'Malt Master's Indulgence'.
