About the distillery
Ben Nevis Distillery is a distillery in Scotland that distills Ben Nevis 10 Years Old and Ben Nevis 21 Years Old whisky. It is located at Lochy Bridge in Fort William and sits just at the base of Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the British Isles, which rises to 4,409 feet above sea level.
A coastal distillery in the Western Highlands, Ben Nevis draws its water from the Allt a’Mhuilinn which originates from two pools, Coire Leis and Coire na’Ciste. Founded in 1825 as an independent enterprise, it has been owned by Nikka Whisky Distilling of Tokyo, Japan, since 1989.
Other Information
This lot offers the buyer the opportunity to own one cask of Ben Nevis which was distilled in 1996, held in bond at the Ben Nevis distillery.
Originally filled with Ben Nevis spirit on 9th July 1996, the whisky has since been maturing in a Hogshead (#877).
The cask was re-gauged on the 18th January 2023, summarising the following:
- Original bulk 247 litres | Original strength 63.4% ABV | 157.2 litres of alcohol.
- New bulk 156.6 litres | New strength 49.5% ABV | 78.52 litres of alcohol.
This would currently yield approximately 223 x 70cl bottles of 26 Year Old cask strength Ben Nevis whisky.

TASTING NOTES:
COLOUR:
Straw gold.
NOSE:
Hard candy pear drops with a bucket of tropical fruit – there are pineapples, mangoes and a slight hint of banana. There is a faint whiff of herbaceous mint and some minerality. The nose does mellow to a soft sweetness that has a reminder of honeyed golden barley sugar sweets.
PALATE:
The sweetness and the tropical fruit dominate over pepper and slight spice. There is a little waxiness that tempers to a lovely mineral flavour. But it is the tropical fruit that seduces. The hogshead has infused some nice spice and a little vanilla that appears on the end. The balance is perfect for this distillery, and they should be really proud.
BODY:
A mouth filling creaminess that is light and very pleasant.
FINISH:
Medium to long finish with the creaminess drying just at the finish with a smack of vanilla and mint.
IMPORTANT:
- Annual storage fees (currently 35p per week) and any cask transfer admin fees will become payable by the buyer.
- Legal ownership of the cask will be transferred to the buyer once payment has been received by Whisky Hammer. Funds will be held by Whisky Hammer until the buyer is in legal receipt of the cask ownership to protect the buyer's transaction.
- Ownership of this cask is auctioned in bond. The buyer will be responsible for any costs relating to removing the cask from bond in the future (i.e UK excise duty / VAT) as well as any other costs associated with cask movement and bottling.
- Non-UK buyers must appoint a duty representative to act on his/her behalf for transfer of ownership of the cask (Whisky Hammer can assist in finding a UK representative if required). The duty representative will need to be registered with HMRC and will normally charge an annual fee for the service.
- Please note if the new owner is a UK revenue trader (business or private individual connected to the trade), they will need to be registered with HMRC and hold a WOWGR certificate.
