About the distillery
Deanston distillery is a Single malt Scotch whisky distillery located on the banks of the River Teith, eight miles from the historic town of Stirling, at the gateway to the dramatic Loch Lomond & Trossachs National Park. It is the largest distillery owned by Scotch whisky producer Distell Group Limited, who also own Bunnahabhain Distillery on the Isle of Islay and Tobermory distillery on the Isle of Mull.
Deanston Distillery started life in 1785 as a cotton mill designed by Sir Richard Arkwright, and remained as such for 180 years until it was transformed into a distillery in 1966. The constant supply of pure water from the River Teith contributed to the decision to turn the mill into a distillery and Deanston is now the only distillery in Scotland to be self-sufficient in electricity, with power generated by an on-site hydro-energy facility. Deanston sits in the Highland single malt region of Scotland.
Other Information
This lot offers the fantastic opportunity to own one cask of Deanston single malt scotch whisky, distilled in 1992.
Originally filled with Deanston spirit on 12th December 1992 the whisky has since been maturing in a hogshead (cask number 1) which is currently held in bond at Deanston distillery.
The cask was regauged on 23rd September 2022 summarising the following:
- Original bulk 262 litres | Original Strength 63.5% | 156.5 litres of alcohol
- New bulk 133 litres | New strength 55.8% ABV | 74.5 litres of alcohol
This would currently yield approximately 190 x 70cl bottles of 29 Year Old Deanston whisky.
Please note the sample is shown for confirmation of the colour only and is not included in the sale (it has been consumed to populate tasting notes!).
UNOFFICIAL TASTING NOTES:
COLOUR:
Solid gold with a slight yellow halo.
NOSE:
Sweet honeyed malt, the hallmark of a fine Deanston. It is clean and the aromas arrive clearly. Mingled with the syrup comes a sweetness that is reminicent of a black grape juice reduction. Apple baked in sugar with lovely soft baking spice floats a perfume under the initial sweetness, that is cut beautifully by the dryness of the oak wood.
PALATE:
Initially there is the Deanston sweetness with hints of herbaceous cleaness. This then fades as the underlying spicyness of the oak kicks in, but it is not as dry as the nose suggested, but rich and lingering. The spice is counterbalanced.
BODY:
Medium light and coats the mouth wonderfully.
FINISH:
Medium finish with a malty dryness and slight prickle of spice and leather.
IMPORTANT:
- Cask storage fee will become payable by the buyer to Deanston (Distell International Limited).
- The buyer will also be liable for a one-off £30 ownership transfer fee payable to Deanston (Distell International Limited).
- Legal ownership of the cask will be transferred to the buyer once payment has been received by Whisky Hammer. Funds will be held by Whisky Hammer until the buyer is in legal receipt of the cask ownership to protect the buyer's transaction.
- Ownership of this cask is auctioned in bond. The buyer will be responsible for any costs relating to removing the cask from bond in the future (i.e UK excise duty / VAT) as well as any other costs associated with cask movement and bottling.
- Non-UK buyers must appoint a duty representative to act on his/her behalf for transfer of ownership of the cask (Whisky Hammer can assist in finding a UK representative if required). The duty representative will need to be registered with HMRC and will normally charge an annual fee for the service.
- Please note if the new owner is a UK revenue trader (business), they will need to be registered with HMRC and hold a WOWGR certificate.
