About the distillery

Ben Nevis Distillery is a distillery in Scotland that distills Ben Nevis 10 Years Old and Ben Nevis 21 Years Old whisky. It is located at Lochy Bridge in Fort William and sits just at the base of Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the British Isles, which rises to 4,409 feet above sea level.

A coastal distillery in the Western Highlands, Ben Nevis draws its water from the Allt a’Mhuilinn which originates from two pools, Coire Leis and Coire na’Ciste. Founded in 1825 as an independent enterprise, it has been owned by Nikka Whisky Distilling of Tokyo, Japan, since 1989.

Other Information

This lot offers the buyer the opportunity to own one cask of Ben Nevis which was distilled in 2004, held in bond at the Ben Nevis distillery.

Originally filled with Ben Nevis spirit on 13th December 2004, the whisky has since been maturing in an ex-bourbon barrel (#536).

The cask was re-gauged on the 20th January 2022, summarising the following:

- Original bulk 198 litres | Original strength 63.6% ABV | 127 litres of alcohol.

- New bulk 149.69 litres | New strength 47.2% ABV | 71.50 litres of alcohol.

This would currently yield approximately 213 x 70cl bottles of 17 Year Old cask strength Ben Nevis whisky.

Please note:

1) the cask photo shown is for display purposes only and is not the actual cask being sold.

2) the sample is shown for confirmation of the colour only and is not included in the sale.

Tasting Notes:

COLOUR:
Pale to straw yellow.

NOSE:
Young on the nose, so ideal for keeping.  The impression of summer florals with whisps of developing peat.  There are hints of mint and a slight cleansing of tobacco leaf.  Diminishes with liquorice and citrus developing.

PALATE:
Initially sweeter than the nose suggested and salty to the taste, with the nose of peat also making an apperance.  Malt flavours with pepper and citrus.  The malt develops darkly to toffee notes.  The vanilla from the refilled oak is soft and helps to hold the balance along with citrus.

BODY:
As expected at this age from a bourbon cask – active and coating to the mouth.

FINISH:
Medium, with a pleasing salt liquorice with a little peat smoke. Warms to peppery citrus.

IMPORTANT:

 - Annual storage fees (currently 30p per week) and any cask transfer admin fees will become payable by the buyer.
